Two of the most intriguing electric vehicles (EVs) of 2021 are the Tesla Model 3 sedan and the Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV. Even though one is an SUV and one is a sedan, they offer many similarities and are often two vehicles that potential EV buyers are comparing.
2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E
Ford might just be getting into the EV game, but the 2021 Mustang Mach-E's build quality is quite a wonder to behold. The vehicle takes everything that a Mustang should be, turns it into an SUV, and makes it run of pure electricity. The premise is amazing, but the result is astounding.
Starting at $50,495, Ford offers the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E in four trim levels: Select, Premium, California Route 1, and GT Performance Edition. The entry-level Select pairs luxurious materials with advanced technologies that provide more excitement than drivers can handle. It offers 370km of estimated range with its standard battery, accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 5.6 seconds, and can be configured with eAWD or RWD. The Premium model ups the driving range to 483km with the Extended-Range battery.
Every model of the Mach-E features Ford's SYNC4A infotainment system with enhanced voice recognition, a 15.5-inch LCD touchscreen, selectable drive experiences, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging pad, FordPass Connect, SiriusXM, and so much more.
2021 Tesla Model 3
Tesla definitely has a longer tenure in the EV world than Ford, but that does always mean the overall vehicle experience is a better one. The 2021 Tesla Model 3 does offer longer driving ranges--423km with the Standard Range Plus model and 568km on the Long Range model--but It comes at a cost. The entry-level Tesla Model 3 is priced at almost $53,000 with prices of $64,990 and $74,990 for the Long Range and Performance models, respectively.
The Model 3 is definitely fun to drive, beats its rivals' range estimates, and features a futuristic, high-tech interior. And while it has pushed EVs into the mainstream, it lacks any interior comfort and vehicle familiarity with its lack of physical control buttons, it does not achieve range estimates on the highway, and its build quality and long-term reliability are questionable.
The Battle of the EVs
Overall, both the Mach-E and the Model 3 have their advantages and disadvantages. In terms of price, handling, and space, Ford is the clear winner. The 2021 Mustang Mach-E has more interior passenger space as well as cargo room thanks to its SUV design vs the Model 3's sedan shape.
For driving, the Mach-E's standard all-wheel-drive design handles better in tough weather conditions and its higher body position allows it to better absorb bumps on rough roads. While Tesla is more advanced in terms of its electric powertrain, it turns potential buyers away with its futuristic looks and minimalist interior. In addition, the Mach-E offers all of these advantages to drivers at a lower price point than the Tesla Model 3.
